Race is Marcus’ mount, companion, and friend. Race is a runt among griffons and was probably the victim of hunters long ago. When Marcus found him he was alone and abandoned, barely a hatchling. The two formed an immediate friendship and have been together ever since.

Despite being a runt, Race has extraordinary skills because of his connection with Marcus. It is because of Race that Marcus has a particular hatred for poachers. He also has a distaste for eating anything that once had feathers as he sees it as being hypocritical.

Race is completely loyal to Marcus and would stick by his side no matter what. He would rather give his life than ever abandon Marcus and it is likely that Marcus feels the same way about him.
